Early in the morning, the students set off together on foot for the arboretum behind the old Lindenhof. There, a small ceremony was held to mark the planting of this year’s “Tree of the Year”—the aspen.
After a welcome from Ms. Foerster and Ms. Borninkhof, those in attendance learned interesting facts about this special tree. Six children presented interesting facts about the aspen and explained, among other things, its unique characteristics and its importance to nature. Afterward, six more children shared their personal wishes for the young tree. Among other things, they wished it a long life, vigorous growth, and many animals that would find a home near it.
Afterward, everyone sang together, and each child was allowed to place a stone they had painted themselves under the tree. Then the children enjoyed some delicious cookies. The festive atmosphere made it clear just how important it is to protect nature and the environment—and that even the youngest children can do their part.
After the celebration, the group headed together to the LAGA grounds, where the children spent the rest of the morning playing and being active.
The tree-planting event was a wonderful shared experience for everyone involved and a valuable opportunity to experience firsthand the importance of trees and sustainable practices. The Grüne-Aue School is delighted to now see an aspen growing in the arboretum and to follow its development in the coming years.
